We survived Thanksgiving

Now, don't read too much into the title. Let me explain.  :)

It all started on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the 20th. My parents got to our house about 9 PM-ish. I got up on Wednesday, headed off to work, and Samuel stayed at home with G'ma and G'pa. My Mom sent me a text around 8:30 or so that Samuel was burning up, coughing, and wheezy. Luckily I'd already had an appt for him that afternoon because he was running a temperature earlier in the week. I got off work around 11:30 AM (Have I mentioned that I LOVE my new job?!?) and headed to the house. Mom and I took Samuel to the Tricare Clinic around the corner from the house. And that's when the fun began...  :(

"Don't worry, baby. G'ma will make it all better."

The nurse was concerned about Samuel's wheezing, and decided to check his oxygen levels. He wasn't doing well. His score was mid 80s, and 100% is the best. He ended up getting 2 breathing treatments, and multiple temperature checks, letting us know his temperature was 103.8. Our little boy was S-I-C-K!!! The Dr. was still worried that he wasn't doing any better oxygen-wise with the breathing treatments, so she called Chesapeake General Hospital around the corner and requested an ambulance. Yes, you read that right. On Wednesday night Samuel and I rode via ambulance to the emergency room!!!  :(

Headed to Chesapeake General Hospital

My Mom drove my car so it wouldn't get towed, and called my stepdad at home to let him know. Oh, and of COURSE this would be the day Jacob is on duty!!! The nurses were able to get me a number to the Truman Quarterdeck and I sent word to have PR1 Thomas call his wife immediately!

The EMTs were all very nice, and Samuel seemed to calm down once we were in the ambulance and away from lots of people, noise, and the breathing treatment masks. He hated them!

Jacob was able to leave the ship to be with us, so the 4 of us adults and Samuel were in this little emergency room at the hospital. Samuel was checked, again, and poked and prodded. Then we were "politely ignored" to give the medicines time to kick in. And we waited. And we waited. And we waited.

Keeping Samuel occupied
"Why is G'pa drinking my milk?"

Samuel was a real trooper through the whole thing. Of course he was worn out, I was worn out, we were ALL worn out. We got home and Samuel went right to sleep in his crib. It was pushing 10:30 PM and we were trying to decide what to do about dinner. I made the call to just cook and eat, even though it was late. We were all hungry, over stressed, and just exhausted! We worked together as a team and made shrimp and grits. I think that was the best meal I've ever eaten!!!  :) Matt and Amanda arrived around 11 and we filled them in on everything.

Samuel had a follow-up appt the next day, Thanksgiving, in VA Beach. Jacob and I took Samuel to the Dr, then stopped by the airport to pick up the big surprise of the weekend- WE FLEW AMY IN TOWN TO SURPRISE MOM!!!  :)

We got home, and Amy sat down on the couch to wait. Everyone was in on the surprise- even Dan and Amanda's fiancee Matt. Mom came in the kitchen holding Samuel, saw Amy, and just stood in the kitchen for a full minute with her mouth wide open. She was so surprised! It was awesome!!

The day was pretty relaxed. We all worked on our assigned foods, and had a late supper around 5 PM.

Afterwards, Dan opened a Christmas present- The Big Bang Theory (TV show) Game. We had a lot of fun playing that, and then Matt and Amanda left to head up to Baltimore.

About an hour later Amanda called to say that Matt's car was bumping and jerking and they weren't really sure what to do. Dan advised her to turn around and come back to the house. They came home, slept about 4 hours, and left on Friday in my S-10 pickup, leaving Matt's car in our driveway.

On Black Friday, Jacob headed out to the Navy Exchange to pick up my big present- a new iPad!!!  :) AND he let me go ahead and open it, so Mom could show me how to use it. (She got one in October) Later that afternoon Mom and I dropped Amy off at the airport, and then headed to Fabric Hut to check out their amazing fabric selections. She bought fabric to make some blankets for Samuel, and I bought fabric to make a quilt.

Saturday and Sunday we just relaxed. After the week we'd had, we needed it!

Monday I took Samuel back to the Dr for a follow-up visit. He's doing better, but not 100% out of the water. So we have ANOTHER appt NEXT Monday as well.

I survived Thanksgiving- 2 Dr visits, an ambulance ride, 3 breathing treatments and 4 booty temperature checks for Samuel, a surprise visit from Amy, a broken down car, a new iPad, and a partridge in a pear tree!  :)

  1. I think Anna Reaghan and Samuel must be stealing our phones in the middle of the night to talk and conspire! I'm so sorry you went through this, too. :( So glad you had your sweet family with you--especially that Jacob could come to the hospital! I hope Samuel's breathing clears up completely so you can go back to "normal" without the extra check ups! Get well FAST, Samuel!
